It's got an 8 inches down firing woofer with a built-in 150 watts r.m.s. They will not disappoint you. They are definitely an upgrade to H.T.I.B. It's now available at Amazon for an unbelievable price of less than USD$300.I have them wallmounted with B-Tech BT33 wall-mounts.
amplifier. The Paradigms have a level of clarity, efficiency, midrange & smoothness that these speakers find hard to match up with. Lol.The unique selling point of this speaker system is the subwoofer. I have been using these speakers since Mar 2006. Most people who buy these speakers would buy it for it's low profile and wall mounting capabilties. These speakers have delivered what I expect from them. The woofer for the satellite speaker is barely 3 inches in diameter and it claims to go as low as 65hz.
I know I have just compared apples to oranges and it still is the low end of high end audio. You will definitely need wall-mounts to avoid close proximity to the wall. Unfortunately these satellite speakers are rear ported, making wall mounting option a bit tricky. That also makes Paradigm Cinema-90 series almost 3 times more expensive than these Onkyo speakers. They sound good and give their money's worth. Acoustic suspension or front ported design would have made it better. Cost cutting measures such as spring loaded clips instead of binding posts and fixed cloth speaker grills in front of the satellite speakers, may also be seen as negative points but not as a deal breaker.Another thing that I would like to mention about these speakers is the unrealistic specification. Though the subwoofer sounds powerful and rattling at times, it does not go below 30hz, and that should be very well suited for most living rooms / apartments.
The subwoofer that comes with these speakers is very well designed and attractive. Also because of a front ported and down firing design it eliminates the use of a speaker grill in the front of the subwoofer which mostly attracts dust and dirt. Yeah right. I bought them from Mumbai, India for USD$900. Onkyo is no exception.
Most speaker manufacturers seem to play with specification. Yawn. Right now the upgrade bug has bitten me and I'm building a Paradigm cinema - 90/110C system.I would recommend these speakers to any one who is on a tight budget and is building their first home theater system. Phew. speakers but not as good as something almost small and comparable as Paradigm Cinema 90s.
I have these speakers paired with an Onkyo TX-SR604 and Pioneer DV-610AV universal DVD player. It has a front port so placement near walls in smaller rooms is less complicated compared to rear ported designs. On the other hand, if you like to bring your house down along with your neighbour's then you need to look elsewhere such as Paradigm Servo which goes all the way down to 10hz. I still give them 4 stars because no one can give you speakers with such aesthetics, performance & value for money for under USD$300. Be prepared to spend money on wall mounts / stands & decent cables to get the best out of these speakers.Paradigm Cinema-90s, 70s, Mirage Omnisat V2s and Nanosats are other speakers also worth considering in this performance / price range.
Speaker system is pretty good, but the speakers are actually much bigger than the picture would lead you to believe. Overall, sound is good and the sub is really pretty good. Nice buy for the price.
I was totally happy with the sound and look of this home theater system until the sufwoofer quit 2 weeks after I hooked it up. I powered the speakers with Onkyo TX-SR606 Home Theater receiver. The vender was real cooperative about replacing it, but had to return the whole system, not just the subwoofer. Also make sure to keep the original packageing because that is the only way they would accept the return. Hook up is almoost to easy, all wires and connectors are labeled and color coded. If not for the failure of the sufwoofer would have rated 5 stars.
If your room is designed for Hi-End sound (sound absorbers, special geometry etc) you probably will be disappointed. Otherwise you will find this item very good.
The sound experience is incredible. You really get great speakers for the money. The subwoofer is incredibly powerful. Friend, Dolby 6.1 Lord of the Rings- ROTK makes this system sing. They look nice too- the speakers don't have the "boxy" look of many other systems- rather, they are very sharp looking with mostly polished metal casing. (some plastic too) They are quite stylish and not bulky.
